Here is a quick technique to double check your timing gears. I normally do
this before installing the front cover but with taking pictures and what
not, I forgot. Start by turning the engine over clockwise, watching the
cylinder number 1 set of lifters. When the exhaust lifter opens and then is
almost closed the intake lifter will start to rise. Try to find the point
where they are both even. This is called split overlap. In this position
the number one piston should be within a few degrees of TDC, if not then
the timing gears aren't lined up correctly.
